Local BJP councillor Bhagat Singh Tokas signs posted identifying Mohammadpur village as Madhavpuram
In the Zonal Committee last year, a motion was made to rename Mohhamadpur. The resolution made by the corporation, according to local BJP councillor Bhagat Singh Tokas, with the sentiments of the residents of the village in mind. He further said that after the corporation passed the resolution, he got threats.
In the proposal, Tokas had said, “During the Mughal era, the name of every village was forcibly changed. Ward 66 S village Mohammadpur falls in the urban village category under the jurisdiction of South Delhi Municipal Corporation. Mohammadpur villagers’ demand to change the name of the village has been pending for a long time.”
“After the municipal corporation approved the proposal to change the name to Madhavpuram, the renaming process was completed today. From now on, this village will be called Madhavpuram instead of Mohammadpur. Residents of Delhi don’t want any symbol of slavery to be a part of the city after 75 years of Independence,” Gupta said on Twitter and posted photographs of the board.
The idea must be authorised by the state name authority as part of the naming process for highways and villages. “We have done it at our end, now the Delhi government should say whether it wants to change the name or not,” he said when asked if South MCD can change the name of a site because the final power to change names resides with the Delhi government.
